Our specialist bereavement team supports families who experience a late miscarriage, stillbirth or whose baby sadly dies during or shortly after birth.
Our team
The maternity bereavement team is a small team, we offer care and support for women and their families at Lister Hospital following mid trimester miscarriage, stillbirth and babies who have sadly died shortly after birth.
The team will offer ongoing practical, emotional support and information in the weeks and months following the loss of a baby. This support will guide families through some of the choices which are required, such as registration requirements, information relating to funerals and any tests undertaken on the mother and baby (such as a post-mortem examination).
The maternity bereavement team continue to care for families after their loss and offer follow-up care with a doctor to discuss any tests, results and ongoing plans or concerns for future pregnancy. The team also provides information about local and national support groups.
Our Spiritual and Pastoral Care Team are here to support patients, carers, volunteers and staff whether they have a faith or not.
We do this by providing pastoral, spiritual and religious care to those we come alongside, not telling them what to do but listening, not judging but rather, being understanding.
You can learn more about what our chaplaincy offers via this page on our website, and you can email them on [email protected].
The Bereavement and Mortuary Service provides practical information and support and arranges for the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death to be issued by a doctor when a loved one dies in hospital. There is further information available for a death at home from the Mortuary and Bereavement staff.
The Robin Room is a dedicated bereavement suite at Lister Hospital. It is located on the Consultant Led Unit (CLU).
The Robin Room provides two comfortable chairs, a wall-mounted television, bathroom, toilet and facilities for making drinks.
Occasionally, care may be provided in an alternative room due to capacity and safety on the labour ward.
Some families may choose to spend a short time in hospital with their baby, whereas others may wish to spend longer. Partners are supported to stay and your close family and friends are welcome, too. All families are offered the opportunity to spend time with their baby at home, also.
The bereavement team are experienced in supporting families with these practicalities.
We offer a range of memory-making opportunities, which include photographs, memory boxes, inkless hand or footprints or clay imprints. Memory boxes are generously donated by the charity; 4Louis.
We also work with many other charities to provide memory-making opportunities to our families, so please ask the specialist bereavement team for further details.
We are also able to offer Ibraheem’s Gift packs, containing the immediate necessities that parents may need to help them prepare for their baby’s Muslim burial.
We have a range of knitted hats and blankets available for babies from 12 weeks’ gestation. Many of these items have been kindly knitted and donated by local volunteers in the community.
The Robin Team are a team of midwives and support workers who are experienced in providing care to families when their baby dies.
Depending on the length of your stay in Hospital, you may receive care from more than one midwife, but we will try to keep the number of staff caring for you to a minimum.
