Dr van Hoogstraten qualified from the University of the Witwatersrand and completed several years of postgraduate training in South Africa. She moved to the UK in 1997 and continued anaesthetic speciality training initially in Glasgow, and then on the London training rotation. Since 2004 she has worked as an anaesthetic consultant at Lister hospital, subspecialising for 5 years in Intensive Care, and then moving subspecialty to Obstetrics and Paediatric anaesthesia. She has many years of experience in anaesthesia for plastic and reconstructive surgery and anaesthesia for major vascular surgery. She also works at the Pinehill and Harpenden private hospitals. In addition to clinical work, she devotes considerable time to teaching and training in both specialty and multidisciplinary environments.
In her spare time, Dr van Hoogstraten is a wannabee athlete and trains for and competes in endurance obstacle events, triathlon, and long distance swim events.
