At the consultant led unit (CLU) at the Diamond Jubilee Maternity Unit you will be seen and cared for by a dedicated, friendly team of midwives, doctors and support staff.
What is CLU?
Our consultant-led delivery suite is mainly for women or babies experiencing complications during pregnancy or labour, or for women who have medical problems requiring specialist care and needing input from an obstetrician, anaesthetist or other specialist healthcare professionals.
Women and birthing people who give birth with an epidural will do so in CLU. Alternatively, if you are due to give birth but have had any concerns about yourself or your baby during your labour, you would be transferred to the CLU.
Our delivery suites are at Lister Hospital in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.

What to bring with you
Please bring your green notes with you when you come in for an appointment, scan or to have your baby. When coming into have your baby please bring:
- Nightwear
- Dressing gown
- Slippers
- Wash things
- Sanitary towels
- Underwear
- Nursing bra
- Breast pads
- Nappies
- Cotton wool
- Baby clothes and hat
Meals
We realise babies don’t come at set times, if you are hungry, please ask the staff to provide you with a menu at any time.
Visiting & Going home
Visiting on CLU is prohibited, except for your birthing partner – as you are likely to be going home soon after the birth – it is best to wait for visitors at home. As women and birthing people generally go home between 2 and 24 hours following the birth, we do not allow flowers or balloons in the CLU. If all is well following the birth of your baby and you are both fit and well, we encourage you to go home within 24 hours to the care of the community midwives, who will provide continuing care from within your own home.
